While this FAST COMPANY article, “Simple Tips to Help You Stand Out on Etsy,” was written for those businesses who sell goods on the site, the tips provided by Kimm Alfonso, the director of seller development at Etsy, are appropriate for all of us.
- Don’t get stuck in a rut. Simply put, Alfonso says that the businesses that listen to their customers are the most successful. What options are they asking for? While you can’t accommodate every desire, our customers often tell us what they really need. We have to make sure we’re paying attention.
- Photos are everything. OK, this one gets my vote! When designing a website, great pictures make all the difference. They invite the viewer to find out more. Photos should have great lighting, good colors and be in sharp focus. It’s always tempting to use what you have, photos that you’ve taken, or a friend has taken, but a high quality image speaks volumes about your company. And remember, you have only seconds to impress your viewer.
- Clearly define your product. The owners we talk to know their business. But when it comes to writing the content for the website, or the copy for a brochure, leave that to a professional. Good marketing copy is more interesting and more persuasive. If you want viewers to take action, leave the copy to a professional.
- Sell what people want to buy. It seems simple. But the truth is, customers often tell us what they are looking for. It’s up to us to listen carefully and take notice of what product or service is selling. How can we market that product and become more successful? How can we tailor our services so they appeal to more people?
