Our network of friends and family are important to the successful start of our business. They not only support us with their advice and positive feedback, but they can also be some of our best customers. But at some point, a business has to grow beyond friends and family. So how do you do that?
Here are the three things that I think are most important to growth:
- Expand your network
- Take advantage of online marketing
- Communicate. Communicate.
Expand your network. Joining other business groups is one sure way to expand your network. But it doesn’t have to be all about business. Really, what you are doing here is creating more exposure for your company. So if normal business networks are boring for you, try other groups. What do you like to do? Think about joining a golfing or tennis group. Chances are, there are several opportunities within your church, if that’s where you are more comfortable. Maybe it’s a volunteer group that appeals to you. Expand your horizons and think about what it is you like to do and how you can meet more people. While participating in these groups, enjoy the main activity and don’t worry about the business for a while. Connections will happen with time.
Take advantage of online networking. If you are growing your business, I’m assuming you already have a website and blog. That’s the start of your online networking. From there, grow into social media platforms. You should also be included in directories. Have you claimed your site in Google? Have you checked your business listing on MOZlocal? You can use Moz local to see how complete and consistent your business listing is across the web. But don’t stop there. Add your business to other appropriate directories – Yelp, Angie’s List, Yellow pages, etc.
Further steps can include Facebook advertising, LinkedIn Advertising and monthly SEO updates that will include backlinks. Each piece of online networking that you do increases your exposure to another audience.
Communicate. Communicate. Communicate. The backbone of SEO is still about your expertise and the value you bring to your audience. So as your exposure grows, more people will connect with your business and sign up to receive your newsletter. Continue to provide quality information to your prospects, on a consistent basis, and your business will flourish.
